As a nation we didn’t do our part in welcoming home these war veterans from a conflict that continues to haunt so many of them

Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Our nation stops to remember our service men and women who served in the Vietnam War. As a nation we didn’t do our part in welcoming home these war veterans  from a conflict that continues to haunt so many of them.

For some the war is over, but the peace never comes.

According to studies, Veterans are 50% more likely to become homeless than other Americans due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing. … Research shows that the greatest risk factors for homelessness are lack of support and social isolation after discharge.

Other statistics state that:

  • Two-thirds of veterans struggle with substance abuse.
  • Over half are suffering from a mental illness or other affliction
  • An average of 22 veterans per day complete suicide
  • The VA reaches only 20% of those in need.

They served us, now let’s serve them.

City Mission is addressing this great need that exists with the Crabtree-Kovacicek Veterans House, a 22-bed residential shelter for homeless veterans scheduled to open July 3, 2018.

We’ve learned that “the most effective programs for homeless and  at risk veterans are community based, non-profit, veterans helping veterans groups. Programs that seem to work best feature transitional housing with the camaraderie of living in structured, substance-abuse free environments with fellow veterans who are succeeding at bettering themselves.”

Welcome home a Vietnam Veteran.
