Recently a resident of City Mission’s Life Recovery Program faced the reality of addiction in a letter:

To my addiction:

Today I realize for the first time with total clarity the damage you’ve done and the intention you have for me.  You plan to keep me in bondage to failure, loss, hopelessness and misery, to finish me off in the ultimate bondage of death.  For so long you have managed to convince me not to fight for more than anything  you  allow.

You’re better and smarter than I gave you credit for. You cunningly allowed me to believe for so many years I could win in the arena against you. You used my own character defects to keep me in the fight, my pride, my arrogance, my ignorance, my thinking.  All along it was you behind the scenes, dictating my life. At first it was the  little, not so important parts of my life. You plucked them from my hands quickly and painlessly, grooming me for your attack. Without warning you came to take control of my life. You allowed me to believe as long as I stayed in the fight I could defeat you.  You were wise enough to convince me that surrender was your victory and my total defeat.

Today, by God’s grace I see you for who and what you are: a destroyer, manipulator and  murderer. You are a complete liar and master at twisting the truth. I’ve identified the tools you use. They are fear, confusion, and uncertainty, the chains and locks you use to keep me in your grip believing  the lies you have filled me with.  But, today instead of telling God how big my problem I know how sweet surrender tastes. Today my fight has a new name “Sweet Surrender”.

You read the news and you hear the statistics about drug addiction. Everyday men and women literally fight for their lives. City Mission’s Life Recovery Program provides an environment where they can grow and heal, leading them back to independent living. They need our help!
